Remembering Ruth Seymour: A Champion Who Ignited Careers
Like many Angelenos, becoming a public radio announcer, especially on powerhouse KCRW was a dream I held close. That's why I started volunteering there in 1991, eager to soak up everything I could. From volunteer, and a few classes at Santa Monica College, I went on to become an intern, and eventually, I found myself filling in as a radio announcer for Morning Edition.
Ruth Seymour, then a leader in Radio, was a force to be reckoned with. Her strength was undeniable, but what truly defined her leadership was her unwavering belief in empowering on-air talent.
Unlike some stations with rigid structures, Ruth fostered an environment where we could produce our shows with a great deal of autonomy. This freedom, this trust, is what gave someone like me, with minimal formal experience, the chance to land a position as a radio announcer and board operator.
One of the most vivid memories I have is of Ruth's unique style during on-air fund drives. She was known for jumping right in, board operating live and keeping the energy high. It was certainly a wild ride in the studio! But that was Ruth – she pushed us, challenged us, and in that, we thrived. Her approach wasn't just her style, it was a recipe for success, and a big part of what propelled KCRW over the years.
The lessons I learned at KCRW, have stayed with me throughout my life. The experience was more than a stepping stone in my life. It instilled in me invaluable skills and a confidence that continues to propel me forward. Who knew that years later, as an elected official, I'd look back on my time at KCRW as one of the most memorable periods of my life?
Ruth Seymour will be deeply missed, but her legacy of empowering local talent and her commitment to fostering a thriving radio station will continue to inspire for years to come.
