I was introduced to my cousin Ruth at another family member's memorial many years ago when I was a teenager. I recall my mom sharing a bit about Ruth's background and her involvement with the station, which fascinated me as I was already involved with radio, and KCRW held a special place in my heart. Intrigued, I reached out to Ruth and she graciously gave me a tour of the station. It was made clear that nepotism wouldn't play a role; if I wanted to be involved, I'd have to start like everyone else, answering phones during the graveyard shift in the basement. From there, I cultivated a relationship with Ruth. I would visit her in her small home in Santa Monica and she would sometimes treat me to dinner at a Polish restaurant on Lincoln Blvd.
During these dinners, she would inquire about my life with a mix of concern and affection, sharing unfiltered stories of our grandparents and expressing her pride in our family.
Occasionally, we'd go to El Cholo, where I'd express my passion for radio, only to be met with her playful skepticism. Ruth, you've inspired me to carry on our family's legacy of championing the arts and seeking truth and wisdom. I'll always cherish our time together, even when I left feeling like I hadn't lived up to your expectations. It's been a gift to have a connection with you that will endure.
